I don't claim this to be a high precision test for measuring increased background radiation levels from the Japanese Nuclear Crisis, but who trusts what anyone is saying about this crisis anymore? If background radiation levels go way up, I expect to detect it with this hand-held Geiger-Muller counter. A better system would actually suck air through a filter material and concentrate radiological material to get a better reading. Also, there are much more sensitive Geiger-Muller counters out there than this hand-held device. During day light hours background radiation increases because of the cosmic radiation emmitted by the sun overhead, so if I make a measurement everyday, I'd need to do it at about the same time. Naturally, things like solar-flares can also increase cosmic radiation. In short, this is just a crude measurement for any potential increase in background radiation levels from Japan.
As an aside, some common radioactive sources in your home are Smoke Detectors, Green Colored Depression-Glass and some Old Orange Glazes on stoneware like that found in some of the older Fiestaware stoneware. Smoke Detectors have Americium in them that is enclosed in a small aluminum container with-in the detector. Since most of the radiation coming from Americium is alpha radiation, very little radiation ever makes it past the aluminium case inside the detector and it is a very small amount of Americium in there. If you break open a smoke detector and eat that speck of Americium, that would be unhealthy. Smoke detectors are in actuality Geiger-Muller counters. When smoke gets between a radiation detector inside your smoke detector and the Americium, your Smoke Dector will sound, provided you have good batteries in it.

Smoke detectrors are ionisation chambers, which is a little different from a geiger counter.

If you put up the Geiger counter, clock and date stamp continuously, you'd be on everyone's computer- those who know what's going on, anyway. I'm very concerned especially since I suspect no one in main stream media is telling the truth here.Thanks! -Lake Calhoun area.

@BobbiBeach, the Civil Dense type Gieger Counters ( The Yellow Ones) pictured at your homepage are very insensitive 'typically'. If you are getting a reading on those yellow colored Civil Defense Gieger Counters, you are already getting zapped good by radiation. Radiation is insidious at the speed at which it might cause health problems. Plenty of things can kill you quicker than radiation, but I am all for due diligence for ALL long term and short term risks in life.
