LÉtudiant de Prague introduisit à lécran un thème qui allait devenir une
obsession du cinéma allemand : un intérêt profond et effrayant pour les
fondements mêmes de lêtre. En séparant Baldwin de son reflet et en les
mettant face à face, le film de Wegener symbolise une espèce spécifique de
dédoublement de la personnalité. Au lieu dignorer sa propre dualité, Baldwin
paniqué comprend quil se trouve aux prises avec un antagoniste qui nest
autre que lui-même.
