The Institute of Knots, 2010 (time-lapse)
Installation & Performance by Swapnaa Tamhane
Toronto, Canada
Viewers were invited to tie knots over the course of 4 hours, and then as the performance piece, I untied every single knot which took 8 hours. I would like to try this artwork again but extend it over several days.
This work is about looking at knot theory in mathematics (examining if two knots, in different spaces, are ever the same), as well as a symbol of how everything from politics to the environment, feel tangled and mulched up. This work is also a drawing a space that is in continuous change.
This time-lapse video is to show the work being unknotted, but is not the artwork itself.
