I used to go to the Bradlee's and Caldor (somewhere between Orange and Shelton, CT-not sure which town) in the early 80s when I was in 1st and 2nd grade to get children's records I would play on my record player when I got home. God I'm old! The reason I don't remember the town is because we moved out of state for my 3rd grade year.
I miss Bradlees too. If you still want to see one there's an abondoned one still standing in Manchester, CT. Very surreal to look at. Still cool nonetheless.
My mom took me and my brothers and sister to Bradlees for school clothes and stuff. We had no car at the time, so Bradlees was the only place in town we could go to. Clothes were expensive, even for the late 80's and early 90's. Caldor was on the highway so that wasn't a option.
you just triggered a memory of being in the electronics dept in '97 and the keyboard on display was demoing Wannabe by Spice Girls...haha what a strange memory.
I shopped at Bradlees for a decade as a kid, and still live in the same town. It's a Walmart now. It has been completely renovated on the inside and doesn't look the same whatsoever, but I can still perfectly picture where everything was. The last thing I ever got was a razor scooter shortly after Xmas of 2000 when they closed
As a kid my favorite thing about the store was the Lego aisle, this was actually back when Kmart, yes Kmart, was the big shit in town. But Bradlees always seemed to get the newest Legos first and I always recognized that as a kid. My least favorite departments were the hideously outdated videogames (only sold original GameBoy and Genesis in my town, all the way up to 2000)
The clothing dept was cool bc each section was separated by walls inside the store, with mirrors lining the walkways
Over the years I've collected three pictures of the Bradlees in my town (Keene NH btw) but they are all outside shots. One shot was actually taken from a helicopter in the early 80's and captures the entire east half of the town, all of which has changed dramatically, yet still remains recognizable in a strange way...
I wish there were pictures or even a video from the inside of that store though. I've always thought it was a shame that survalliance video was not available...would be a trip
