  • I understand the comments but have to say that Emax has spent alot of marketing money downplaying zirconia and the data is that they are equal to pfm in strength. It does boil down to the "singer and not the song". Prep and support design are critical. Just as critical for Emax as an all porcelain crown it is subject to failure by fracture. It is about case design and execution. Not the materials as much

  • Thanks @Bleu2th - yep, I totally agree. It is about the case selection, material use and case design more than it is about the material itself. The problem I find is that, as you rightly say, clinicians are influenced by marketing without understanding the technical elements of crown construction.

    thanks for your input.

  • Not exactly the truth here. Nice try tho.....Natural teeth have 95 mpa, layered zirconia with proper frame support (not like the drawing) is stronger than emax.

  • @Bleu2th Hi, thanks for the comments. I totally agree that in theory Zirconia is stronger, however the part of a crown that fractures is almost always a small corner of ceramic. I agree that the crown will not fracture in half with ziconia, but I'm still concerned about these small chips... and for the patient, ultimately they don't care if it's a small chip or total failure in half... the crown has still broken.

So for me, e.max is stronger as it is less likely to suffer from these small chips

  • that is perferfect and the same what i always say to my patients and collegues. but also i always talk about aesthetics: crowns with no core are always more aesthetic crowns

  • @ugomatias thanks, and yes crowns with no cores are often more aesthetic...at least they are EASIER to get great aesthetics.

  • i understand that platinum foil veneers is making a comeback because of concerns of minimal or no reduction at all. .....can you have some demonstrations in this tecnique? thank you......... tech fr/California

  • Or, one can learn how to properly design zirconia framework. I would never allow such framework to proceed to layering-whether it be alloy or zirconia. Layering on well designed framework be it e.max, or zirconia yields the most aesthetic result and long term success. It should be a case-by-case decision. Wear on opposing dentition is a factor as well (e.max or zirconia VS either one that has been layered).
