@delta69alpha Yeah, had the Mini been on my radar at the time I might have splurged a bit more than I did for the lighter weight and more capacity, also it's more compact. The hiker takes up a bunch of room in my pack...

Good review;it is great to know that that you have used this in the field for a while and have sussed it out good and proper.I have a Vario which I have yet to use in the bush but I am confident it will be a good unit.

I purchased my PUR Hiker (same filter; original brand name) around '94 or so. It still works as good as the day I bought it. Like delta69alpha mentioned, you need to make sure that you keep the intake from sitting directly on top of sand, or else it will go right through the prefilter and scratch the pump mechanism very quickly and pretty badly.

Since I'm on a budget I got the Hiker, well worth it for something to have better than nothing!

@rooftopeagle reason why i got back in 03..i wasnt making much at the time. But for the extra 40$ the mini is better imho. kinda the if i had to do it again.

Does the filtered water still have the boggy pond smell or is the it orderless ?

@Gabbos this water was orderless. i have had water that has smelled off before.,,, but no issues resulted from drinking it.
