CANOPY WALK PRESS STATEMENT ON 8 FEB 2011
i. RFP for the Establishment of an Eco-Tourism Venture (ETV) Comprising of an Educational Nature Trail and Canopy Walk on Penang Hill, North East District, George Town, Penang was advertised on September 30, 2010 and closed on November 30, 2010.
ii. Site visit and briefing on the ETV was conducted on October 11, 2010 and five companies attended the site visit. The companies are :
- D'nonce Technology Berhad,
- Sim Leisure Consultants Sdn. Bhd.,
- Tanjung Serbaneka,
- Creative Quest Sdn. Bhd., and
- Alam Langkawi Sdn. Bhd.
iii. On the closing date, only one company - Creative Quest Sdn. Bhd. (CQSB) submitted their proposal.
iv. The ETV will be undertaken in the form of a 'Foundation'. The Foundation is not operated and conducted primarily for profits but with the objectives to:
- promote the conservation and protection of the environment
- promote culture, arts and heritage
- alleviate the incidence of poverty regardless of race, creed or region.
v. Cost of the development is RM 3 million to be fully finance by CQSB.
vi. The Foundation will contribute 10% of net profits of the ETV to Penang Hill Corporation or any other organization determined by the State Government and balance of 90% of the net profits will be fully utilized towards development of Penang Hill.
vii. The ETV will comprise of an Educational Nature Trail (ENT) and Canopy Walk.
viii. The ENT will follow the existing path next to the old drainage system on Penang Hill and estimated to be approximately 1.6 kilometers long. The finishing point is at Summit Road.
ix. Educational signage and information will be provided on the flora and fauna found on the Hill.
x. The attraction of ETV will be the Canopy Walk built in 'zig-zag' with East meets West concept formation and measuring approximately 200 metres.
xi. Additional feature to the ETV are Giant Swings for viewing and enjoying the natural environment of the jungle.
xii. The project will be conducted in two phases for duration of 10 months, 4 months for the first phase and 6 months for the second phase.
xiii. The first phase of the project will include :
- dismantling of the existing / old Canopy Walk located along Summit Road;
- renovation of JKR quarters to Administrative Office and visitor's centre;
- construction of part of the Educational Nature Trail from the Administrative Office and Visitor's Centre at existing JKR bungalows to the location of the proposed new Canopy Walk; and
- construction of the Canopy Walk at various points in the jungle canopy just off the Nature Trail.
xiv. The second phase will include :
- construction of the remainder of the ENT along the path of the existing drainage system up to Summit Road;
- construction of the rest area at the Heli-Pad plateau;
- construction of other rest areas; and
- construction of and giant swings.
xv. The existing canopy walk situated at the Summit Road and the materials will be dismantle and reuse for the new Canopy Walk if possible.
xvi. CQSB will be granted a license to manage and operate the ETV for a period of 20 + 15 years under terms and conditions to be mutually agreed.
xvii. A Board of Management will be formed comprising of five (5) members and two (2) of them will be appointed by the State Government.
xviii. The ticketing price will be inclusive of insurance coverage. Senior citizens and pre-school children will not be charged and students with the identification card will entitle for a special price.
