It is very easy to have a pack of Tums in your pocket and pop a few every time you get digestive distress following your meal. In fact, the longer you make a habit of popping ant-acids the worse the your indigestion issues will get over time. The reason this is true is because you are not treating the cause of your digestion problem you are only treating the symptom. The acid in your stomach is not the problem; it's the result of a problem. So just removing the acid does not fix the source of the problem.

One reason you may be having indigestion problems is that the acid is the normal amount but your stomach lining has become sensitive to it. The bottom line here is that stomach acid, no matter how much, should never burn your stomach lining. Your stomach lining was designed to handle your stomach acid, which is called HCL Acid. It is not designed for other types of acids like the type of acids that form from food that does not get broken down properly by your digestive process. Ironically enough, too little HCL acid will prevent proper digestion and different acids will form when the undigested food is fermented in your intestines. This acid from fermentation WILL burn your stomach lining because your stomach lining was not designed to handle it.

Along with the burning associated with indigestion, you may have bloating and this is also a result of not digesting your food because of too little acid. The remedy for indigestion is not to take gas absorbers and acid reducers. That is just a temporary symptom reliever. To get to the source of indigestion you need to break down your food better.
Indigestion: There is hope

There are many ways to enhance digestion and get your body to have more digestive power. Too many meals and frequent snacking is a sure fire way to weaken your digestion. It takes time for your digestion to recover full strength after a meal. Frequent snacking keeps your digestion in a tired state. So the small multiple meals concept I my opinion is not ideal for people with digestive problems. When your digestion is given a rest it has time to get ready to produce sufficient stomach acid to completely break down your meal. Remember we are not cows with 4 stomachs that are designed for grazing all day.

Another way to enhance digestion would be to limit your fluid intake while eating. Too much water and guzzling will dilute your stomach acid. Some time this measure is not enough and actually supplementing acid with your meal will help break down food and absorb the nutrition that eventually will build your ability to make enough stomach acid on your own.

From a chiropractic standpoint for many years patents have reported better digestion after having their spine adjusted. The reason for this is quite simple. There is a direct link fro your spine to your stomach. That link is through nerves. Your brain tells your body its time to digest food when you eat. It sends that message through nerves that follow close to your spine and branch off to the stomach and connect to nerves in your spine. So if you have a mechanical problem in your spine near the nerves that go to your stomach the spine will irritate those nerves and the information going through that nerve will change. The result is that the irritated nerves will irritate your stomach and it will not function properly causing indigestion problems.
Indigestion: A Chiropractors Approach

There are many ways to help indigestion problems and for successful treatment it takes a good understanding of a persons life style in order to deliver the proper treatment. There is not a cookie cutter treatment for indigestion. Generally the cause of your indigestion problem is unique and requires some analysis to figure out the true cause of your problem. I have given a few concepts of how I approach it and it's certainly worth giving it a try instead of covering up your problems with antacids and such as it worsens. If those few tidbits I gave you are not enough then a thorough evaluation of your indigestion problem may be what it takes to get to the bottom of your digestive health problems. You may need a spinal adjustment along with some dietary adjustments and you may never have to anticipate that awful feeling after you eat called indigestion. Call my office at 814-337-0070 for an appointment to evaluate your indigestion.

The only treatment for indigestion is to get to the root of the problem.
