@volkl78 Landmark Baptists believe that there has always been a true Church and true Christian practice in in the larger ecclesiastical institutions going back to the time of Christ. Most Baptists see themselves as Christians joined in an association based on Christian beliefs, not as a denomination as such. "Protestant" is not a word the Reformers used of themselves -- Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Beza and the other Reformers considered themselves Reformers of the true Church.
@volkl78 A Baptist is a Christian, and a Christian adheres to the authority of scripture. John Calvin adhered to the authority of scripture, because he too was a Christian. Certain doctrines are clearly taught in scripture, if one reads scripture plainly, without spiritualizing or allegorizing it. So there are doctrines that all Christians can and should agree on because they are clearly set forth as truth in the Bible. That makes one a Christian, not a Calvinist or Mohlerist or whatever.
response to LOVESTORMS the idea that all baptist are Calvinist of one form or another. This is interesting because I have found that most baptist tend to reject Calvinism if you question them yet you look at their beliefs and you see a different picture. Its almost like they have split personality disorder. There are traditional refomed baptist like spurgeon which is Calvinistic then there is the modern Adrian Rogers, Charles Stanley type which picks and chooses, Rejecting the ULI of TULIP.
Baptist are not protestants? That is absurd! And to say that the Baptist Denomination was formed before the Roman Catholic Church, what? What is true is this there were Christians before there were Roman Catholics because Christians were present in the first century, Roman Catholics were not, in fact Roman Catholics are not Christians to began with. Anybody who is a believer in sola fide could be considered a protestant because they stand in protest to the Roman doctrine of fath and works.
The central issue of Christianity is Christ as the Lord. Heresies often are "in house" dissagreements. Often they do not make you not a Christian. Mohler uses the term heresy to mean a gospel negating claim. Apostasy it seems to me is a belief where a person has "left the dock." I had a theology teacher who was saved in a church who did not believe in the trinity. It was a Jesus only church...he laster came to an orthodox view of the Trinity, but I think he was a Christian before that.
@ILovestorms All Baptists are Calvinists of one sort or another. Anyone who believes in the perseverance of the saints or the security of the believer has Calvinist elements in his or her theology. Those who established the SBC were Calvinists. Read the Abstract of Systematic Theology written by James P. Boyce, FIRST President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President, 1872-79 1888. Particularly Chapters 29 &30. Southern was the first seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention.
@RMCDisciple Baptist are not protestants because they didn't come out of the Catholic to protest. The Baptist denomination was BEFORE the Roman Catholic church was formed. I have read the BF&M and it is NOT overwhelimngley Calvinist. Adrian Rogers was the chairman and he rejected calvinism!
@ILovestorms Infiltrated? Brother, Calvinists led the Reformation and built the Baptist denomination. Read the Baptist Faith and Message and compare the references to the scriptures cited. You'll find the BF&M overwhelmingly Calvinist in it's theology.

@ILovestorms Baptists in America and Britain find their origins in Protestant Puritanism and thereby the Reformation.
