A video of an oscilloscpe built by me and my partner for our thesis at the Gdansk University of Technology, Poland. Here in its development stage. It had 320x240 screen, up to 40MHz sampling rate and a 5MHz 3dB bandwidth, 13KB of sample memory for each channel and USB support for downloading aquisitions to the PC.

For the digital part we used an ARM type sam7s256 microcontroller, Spartan3 FPGA & 3 AVR ATmegas. The analog consisted of 2 TDA8703 A/D conv. 2 D/A (for Y axis control) and some opamps and relays.

The design belongs to my university now, so I won't be sharing any details, but there are many interesting projects with the TDA8703 A/D - just search a little.

  • I know u said the design belongs to the uni, but I really want to know how much a home made one costs. Is it possible for you to share that info? Don't need details, just final price tag would be enough.

  • It was ~1100PLN which is 333$ by the recent exchange rate. You could cut down cost if you didn't buy the FPGA(170PLN) and ARM(100PLN) chip ready on small PCBs and make all the PCBs at home. The LCD was ~150PLN.OpAmps for higher freq.are expensive too.

The important thing is:do you want to build an oscilloscope yourself.Aside all work you have to put in it,you don't get a device as reliable as commercial ones which have big budgets for dev.and are made by people with knowledge and experience

  • that is pretty cool but the whole "design belongs to the university" thing bugged me a bit. when my university asked me to sign over my design I told them to fuck off.

  • very very nice!!! 6 people are idiots! good work!

  • where did you buy the LCD? seems very cheap

  • Oscilloscope in a cardboard box :D You're my hero!

  • Good day, I searched for the TDA8703, in mouser electronics says "chip obsolete" :( any remplacement?

  • Hi,

I am looking for good ADC modules for an ECG project. Any recommendation?

  • Shoebox-scope ftw! :D

  • Looks great, but what good is it if you cannot share the info with other people so they can build one too????????

  • Awsome scope, keep up the good work, dont listen to negative people......
