James Kalm responds to viewer requests and returns to PS1 for a unique opportunity to view a selection of works by legendary New York painter Jack Whitten. This show follows the progression of Whitten's practice from the early works of the 1960s, to the massive mosaic piece "9.11.01". As a member of the downtown group of artists who would transform the "New York School" Whitten was featured in the recent "High Times Hard Times" experimental abstraction exhibition that took place recently at the National Academy. "9.11.01" is the artist's response to the disaster as seen from his studio near "Ground Zero."

My favorite pieces are the first one you showed, "Look mom, look see the funny people" and "Conversation Piece". Especially "Conversation Piece". Also, the piece about 9/11 looks very impressive- reminds me of the sort of thing Anselm Kiefer might do. Not that impressed with the pieces dealing with Martin Luther King. Anyway, thanks James for another great report.
