Near Kratovo, in East Macedonia,
is the village of
Kuklici.
It was named after the large
stone blocks in its vicinity.
Local residents dubbed the
stone blocks as dolls because
of their strange shape
that resembles a human
figure.
The creation of dolls is
connected with many legends
that are told for centuries
among the local population.
One of them says that the
stone figures are in fact
bridegrooms and wedding
guests.
At the wedding, all of them
were petrified by the curse of
one girl from the village who
was madly in love with the
bridegroom.
She cursed all the guests at
the wedding to turn into
stone at the moment when
the groom kisses the bride.
While the faces of the bride
and groom are kissing, the
faces of the guests are
laughing.
This natural
phenomenon is an
incredibly beautiful
sight.
There are around 140
stone dolls in the valley,
some of them more than
10 meters high, and
research showed they
are nearly 10 thousand
years old.
