Arranged and Performed by Judith Giddings on a Modern Mountain Dulcimer with extra 1 1/2 and 8 1/2 frets.

Riddle Songs were popular in England in the 15th Century and brought to America by early Appalachian settlers. This one is usually called "THE Riddle Song" aka "I Gave My Love a Cherry", although there are other riddle songs, such as Scarborough Fair. This song was adapted for Johnny Mathis in 1956 as The Twelfth of Never (lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, music by Jerry Livingston).

  • Until this moment, I never noticed that Johnny Mathis's "The Twelfth of Never" and the old folk song had the same melody...wow...and this was so pretty too!
