1st degree burns involve reddening of the skin but no blisters. 2nd degree burns involve blisters just under epidermis. 3rd degree burns involve destruction of epidermis and some damage to underlying dermis later. 4th degree burns involve total destruction of dermis and epidermis, and usually also damage or destruction of underlying muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and nerves (usually fatal). Arc-flash burns tend to be 3rd-degree. Search for "arc flash" on YouTube for more info.
