While many believe the blessing of the animals began with St. Francis of Assisi, the original animal blessing has as many parents as a dog has fleas.

Olvera Streets tradition dates back to the third or fourth century when San Antonio de Abad (St. Anthony of the Desert) began blessing animals.

In the past, cows, cats, dogs, snakes, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, horses, opossums, hamsters, birds, monkeys, llamas, camels, chickens and peacocks have graced Olvera Street.

As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water.

The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love.

No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated.

When we bless something, we focus our attention on the perfection that God put into it when God created it. When we bless what is good in our lives we increase it, adding our positive energy to the positive energy that is already a part of it. When we bless something that is not good, we cause the negativity in it to decrease because we are replacing it with positive energy. Blessing increases the positive energy field in everything that exists in our Universe.

  • Animals don't have souls? Look into the intelligent and loving eyes of my faithful companion and tell me that he is without a soul. If he doesn't bite you for it, I will.

  • Let me start out by saying I thought this would be an incredible event to be at-

We had all our anti- cruelty info out and were thinking about bringing adptable animals. so glad we didn't'catholic church blesses them only to eat them. so after you slaughter them, you are blessed. WRONG! I was touched by the people who were there 4 their animals other than that it was a disgusting ritual!

  • @hollywoodjinky Religion shouldn't be forced on animals and children!

  • This was animal exploitation! SICK!!!!! I probably would have gotten arrested if I would have gone.

  • Do you hear the cow screaming in pain? The dog screaming?

This cardinal is the biggest phony in L.A.

It was an awful day, we attended and were stunned by the hypocrisy. Many animals were mistreated on this day. What a sanctimonious load of crap.

    Thanks for this video.
