FAO Chief appeals to Obama to help end hunger

6 November 2008, Rome - FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf called on US President-elect Barack Obama to make the eradication of world hunger a priority on his agenda and to host a World Summit on the issue in the first half of next year.

In a message congratulating Senator Obama on his election, Diouf said the United States should, "in the first semester of 2009, take a leadership role in convening a World Summit on Food Security in order to reach a wide and common consensus on the definitive elimination of hunger from the world".

Heightened awareness of the plight of 923 million hungry persons as a result of the ongoing global food and financial crises created a "special window of opportunity for such an initiative", Diouf said.

"The Summit must find US$30 billion per year to build and develop rural infrastructures and increase agricultural productivity in the developing world, particularly in low-income food-deficit countries, with a view to doubling production to ensure food security for a world population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050", Diouf continued.

"The Summit should also lay the basis for a new agricultural trade system offering farmers in developed and developing countries alike the chance to make a decent living", he added.

"We must use our intelligence and imagination to design policies to promote sustainable agricultural development based on fair international trade".

1)This man has a PhD from one of the best Universities in the World and runs one of the most important organizations in the world (but clearly you know more than he does)

@DocStrange0123 Yes in that case datas don't matter. How many people the earth can support? how many more years, decades we have before oil is depleted? or how much more uranium there is left? or... it is none of my concerns. I know that this will come and we will have to face it. This leave us one solution: control population. This is what FAO Chief should promote. But he dares not. It is much better to hide (fore how long?). It is safe at least to say we want to save lives and stop hunger.

(lmao). Is not population control that is the problem here, at least not the main problem, yes education is fundamental but... There is not enough water, earth, space, air, minerals, land.... for everyone. We must fight to control the population if we want to help hunger, wars, diseases... We must educate. No leader can talk this . Except for China and they face many criticisms. I can tell you people were dying from hunger in China some 40 years ago. Even now they rely on imported food.

@Caramonn oh really? and where do you take you data from? actually with a good distribution of resources (something that does not happen) the planet is perfectly capable of sustaining more than that... limited planet, limited resourses, bad distribution, bad consumtion, bad diet habbits, bad (lots of "bads"") a lot of people not too many... it's way easier to pretend to be an expert about this issues...

The FAO is a rusty bureaudracy whose primary purpose is to perpetuate itself. I spent time there and was brutally disappointed to learn its programs are secondary. This place is run by an African mafia.
