The intro text is a bit hard to read, so here it is again:

The story so far...

A writer, Katurian, is being interrogated about a crime that his interrogators, Ariel and Tupolski, have told him little about. Katurian has just finished reading one of his stories aloud.

The story, "The Tale of the Town on the River," is a twist on the Pied Piper tale. In Katurian's story, the disguised Piper is on his way out of town when he happens upon a poor, unfortunate little boy. The boy offers the Piper half of his meager sandwich. Yay.

As thanks, the Piper chops off the boy's toes.
