On the way to drop off the chevy in Ventura. The new owner drove it back to San Luis Obispo which is like 200+ mile trip. It was a nice day by the ocean, and perfect day for the last time cruising it. Im happy it went to a good home.

  • It was a 1954 chevy 235, straight 6 with offenhauser dual intake and fenton headers/dual exhaust with 12" glasspacks. I think it had 4:11 gears so it would rev pretty high.

  • I can remember riding in my roommate's '51 Chevy on Texas Hwy 84 in 1962 on our way back home from college for the weekend and commenting on how the engine was screaming at only 60 MPH. I had never ridden in one of those Chevies, always Buicks or Oldses or Fords which were more relaxed at the same speed. I said "I'll bet you couldn't shift into second at this speed" and he just laughed.

  • You need to shift gears! Seriously, can you imagine having to take a five hour trip in a car like this? Just think, that's what people had to deal with who owned those cars--that droning, reving engine would drive you crazy! It gives real meaning to the term NHV (noise, harshness, vibration). Chevy finally made overdrive available in '55, but it should have had it in '46 when the first postwar cars came out like all the independents had.

  • Yep, it's got ratio rev with that 4:11 axle--probably turning 3000 RPM at 60--those cars needed overdrive.

  • I got a '50 too.

Great cruisers. I remember when I got mine.

I couldn't stop smiling, especially when I got it running.

But, unfortunately, now I'm rebuilding it.

My 52 Bel Air is the same thing with a few eceptions i have installed a 3:51 differential, disc brakes dual M.C. alt, 8 in Corvette rims and MSD ignition, Mallory distributor, high output coil and AC r47s sparkplugs a very hot plug that does not foul. I keep up with the best of them. Thanks for your input. Petespets

  • i love this video i hve been driving a 52 bel air for 50 years i have driven this route over 40 years ago the chevy 6 sound is music to my ears, it has a unique sound like no other car, its a 4:11 i can tell, the engine is what we called wound up tight. the truck you are passing is a unified grocers truck i worked for this company for 35 years. Going up the grapevine with a 4:11 was a piece of cake in July we passed up other cars and never over heated we laughed at those stopped for water.

  • Fenton headers+glasspacks = great sound out of any chevy straight 6 ;) hehe nice car

  • Hey, I have a 50 chevy too. I'm hoping to have it drivin when I'm 16. Made me feel like I was just ridin' in it. Thnx!
