Women aren't forced to wear burqas in Syria. In fact, much like Iraq was before the invasion, Syria is a secular society which rebels against Islamic fundamentalism. Some women choose to wear head scarves because it is a traditional custom, much as it is in many parts of Christian eastern Europe. Syria is a totalitarian state, true, but not an Islamic Fundamentalist one.
