Behind their fancy costumes and complex, beautiful music, operas tend to have nasty storylines. Unfortunately, this paticular sad one is based loosely off a true story. Mrs. Garner really did kill one of her children to save her from being returned to slavery.
I also had the opportunity to sing in the premiere production 2005 at MOT. I think Tracie got to sing one show. Both she and Denyce were so amazing in the role of Margaret Garner! It was also cool to be onstage afterwards with Toni Morrison herself. The opera is just powerful...There wasn't a dry eye in the last scene on stage or off.
I am performing "Margaret's Lullaby" and "A Quality Love" from this opera for my junior recital at Lawrence University. I'm so excited!!!!! I can't wait to go home to Chicago to see it!!! Toni Morrison is amazing!!!! Richard Danielpour thanks for writing this it's beautiful and I will sang my hear out like you wrote it to be!!!!
Documentaries like this are so important for the world. It shares the creative process of the most beautiful, the most profound, the story of an important human experience. THANK YOU. I saw this in Detroit with Graves. Tracie Luck is outstanding also!
I had the oppotunity to paticipate in the Margaret Garner workshop in the summer of 2004 and in the premiere the following spring. I'm very happy to see such a sweetheart like Tracy Luck get the opportunity to perform the role on stage. Her renditions of "A Quality Love" and "Sad Things Far Away" are deeply moving. Other highlights are Gaines' aria "I remember the curve of every hill" and the duet between Margaret and Cilla in the second act.
@singurheartout4 Yup. That's the plot...
