Stanley Baldwin was a good politician. He remembered only too well the horrors of the First World War and did everything he could to stop Europe running headlong into another ruinous war. But unlike Chamberlain, he knew his limitations and had no delusions of grandeur.

@swanseajackthe3rd "...Did everything to stop Europe running headlong into another ruinous war." Rubbish. He might have rearmed, running the risk of getting canned in any election after 1931. Or do you mean that because war didn't break out for 2 years after Baldwin quit that he was justified? Bah. Better to examine the nation Baldwin took on in 1923, when he first became PM, and then compare it to what he left Chamberlain in 1937. Baldwin fails that test, though not so badly as Chamberlain.
