http://www.bjdcollectasy.com A tutorial on using pastels to color your doll's body to enhance the sculpt and give it realistic coloring. Body blushing is easy to do, and can have spectacular results! The only materials needed are artist's pastels and Mr. Super Clear (MSC) flat lacquer or other flat laquer sealant safe for resin dolls.

A doll can be lightly to heavily blushed. Hands and feet only can be blushed or only parts likely to show when the doll is clothed. The doll can be completely disassembled for spraying, or partially disassembled. Taking off the head, hands, and feet may be sufficient.

  • When your sealing the doll do you un-string it again or does that not matter?

  • You can seal your work without disassembling your doll. Leaving the doll assembled or dis-assembling the doll is a matter of choice, so do whatever works best for you. :D

  • are any chalk pastels alright? ^^' i also have testors dullcote, i was reading on den of angels its alright to use as well

  • Testor's or Model Masters (which is made by the same company) can be used. Some people prefer them, others prefer other brands.

For pastels, you can use any brand, but they need to be pastels with high quality pigments. You don't need a whole box. You can start with just 4-light red, red, and a lighter and dark brown, (I like raw & burnt umber). You can buy single pastels in art stores & online. DON't get chalk pastels, oil pastels, or chalk. You want soft artist quality pastels.

  • can I also fix the face up/body blushing with mr super clear flat uv cut?

    Is it the same?

uh...sorry for my stupid question, but i think uv cut would be better for the resin and the doll color...or?

    greetings, Liren

  • Yes, it's essentially the same as regular Mr. Super Clear except it has some UV light protection. Many people prefer it because they worry about their dolls yellowing.

  • This is kind of weird because I have a friend named tara and she looks like that :O [Her face does]

  • You can use any colors you like, of course. :D If your doll has a face-up, test pastels on an unobtrusive spot on your doll (like the head-cap) to try to match the colors. If you are doing your own face-up, youcan just use many of the same colors.

  • Hello, one more question, what is the best color for body blushing on a white skinned doll?

  • Thank you, your really are fantastic, this will help with the painting of my first doll

  • i love the music in this video, and it is really helpful ^^

  • I like your choice of music., nice tutorial. :3

  • @MsKiraKat Sorry for the late reply! That statement 'Eating away at the vinyl' that gave me chills! *Shudder! What a horrible image! Thanx for the heads up! Guess its Mr. S.C. then. I don't mind waiting tho. I'm still a LONG way off before i can get one! So I'm stocking up on necessary supplies. Thank you SO much for the advice! You are my guiding light! My guru! *giggles!* I hope i'm able to catch you the next time I may be confused and have any other questions. Once again, Thanx! *HUUUGS!* :DD

  • @Sovajin Yes, I'm 100% sure that obitsus, like the Dollfie Dream, are vinyl. Mr.Super Clear is okay for vinyl, but the problem is that it costs about twenty bucks because you have to buy it online and have it shipped. Testor's Dull Cote is more readily available, but it has been known to eat away at the vinyl and not dry properly. Bobobie has beautiful tanned dolls (look at owner pics, not the ones on the Bobobie website(horrible)) for an amazing price (BJD-wise, LOL) if money is an issue. ^_^

  • @MsKiraKat Thanx so much for the reply! I WISH i could buy one already tanned, but they are SO expensive b/c of their color! And sometimes, they no longer have or never or never will have that color avaliable. Its why i asked;thinking it might be easier. Oh! I didn't think soft bodied meant vinyl. Hmmm. R u sure? Wonder what happens if you seal it with a reg. sealer anyway?

  • Is this song from Final Fantasy 4 or a Hiyao Miyazaki film? So familiar...Thanks for the tutorial!
