Primary Muscle
Gastrocnemius (Calf muscle)

Start
Position your feet on the edge of a step with only the balls of your feet on the platform and your legs straight but not locked at the knees Take one foot off the platform and hold it up in the air or position it across the heel of the other foot for extra weight.

Movement
Without Clenching your toes and keeping your legs straight raise up as high as you can onto your toes until you feel a full contraction in your calf muscle. Slowly return to the start position. Perform the prescribed number of reps and repeat on the opposite side.

Tips
When pushing up onto your toes make sure your toes aren't clenched and the weight bearing across the ball of your foot is even.

  • Hi Benjamin. Yes, speed does matter as does the weight but it also depends what you are trying to achieve. If you are looking for bulk, your nutrition is #1. Then you want to start with a relatively low weight (dumbell in the opposite hand) and do lots of reps but also keep the pace the way Yvette does it in the video. Then increase the weight and reduce the reps. Keep going until you are only doing 6 reps and can't do any more - always do your reps like this. Do 4-5 sets. Hope that helps.

  • can you get those kind of calfs from those raises?

or did she combine it with running?

  • Yes I play sport, but you don't need to play sport to get great calfs. This exercise regularly (3 x 15 reps per day, 5 days a week) combined with a low body fat level will give you great definition in your calf muscles. Good luck

  • i was wondering if the speed matters? ive been doing these often with high reps and around 4 sets of them, i dont go this slow though i go kinda fast but i feel the burn and they feel like they are going to explode. my calves look bigger but im getting that negative feeling where something is telling me to go slower like the girl in the video.
