How to install, remove, replace, or reseat RAM in a Dell Vostro 1500 or similar. (Applies to many Dells from the same era)

VIDEO ERROR: I misspoke (AKA I was incorrect). The Vostro 1500 is identical to the Insprion 1520/1521, though the same steps will likely apply on the 1525.

Pleaes send me a message if you want to see me fix something I haven't already done! I have a Dell Vostro 1500 and an HP TX2500 which I'm willing to demonstrate on.

  • Thanks for that. I can't use DDR3 in a VOSTRO 1500 then?

  • @Flash635 No, unfortunately. DDR2 only.

  • @rdbahm Thanks.

    I use any DDR2 if it's 200 pin?

  • @Flash635 Yes. If you're supplementing existing memory (As in, there's only one module installed and you're installing a second), you should get a module that matches the existing one. If not, additional speed can't hurt you. I don't know how fast the Vostro 1500 is capable of running memory, but the price difference between various speeds of RAM is fairly small, so I'd go for the fastest you can afford.

  • Thanks for the video.

I wanted to upgrade my Vostro 1500, too. However, I found there are 2 different RAM on the market.

    DDR2 PC2-5300, NON-ECC

    DDR2 PC2-6400, NON-ECC

They are both 2GB. Which one should I get? Or are they actually the same? Thanks.

  • @lowbvan The last number is the speed. Get the 6400. Faster is usually safer, as computers can always clock it down to make it work.

  • @rdbahm Thanks, that helps a lot. The reason I asked is that I've seen different DDR2 RAM offered for Asus laptops than for my Vostro and at different prices for the same brands and G at the same supplier.

4G is the most the Vostro 1500 can take.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread(?) I think others can benefit from what we're discussing.

  • i have that laptop

  • Thanks for taking the time to post this. It was extremely clear, easy to follow and very helpful.

  • aye mate. that was of great help. Cheers!

  • what is the maximum Ram spec should I buy for my Dell vostro 1500?
