A 3-year-old boy is recovering at a hospital after he was shot during a home invasion early Tuesday morning.
KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that Jace Jenkins is expected to recover. The boy was hit in the back of the leg.
Police were called to the home at East 75th Street and Sycamore Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. The boy's father, James Jenkins, said a man armed with an assault rifle broke into the home and demanded money, cell phones and jewelry.
"And the next thing you know, this guy is coming out of my kitchen with some kind of shotgun," Jenkins said. "I said, 'Don't shoot me. I've got little kids upstairs.'"
Jenkins said he gave the intruder money, but nothing he could do would appease him.
"He saw my ring. He said, 'Give me the ring, too.' And I just said, 'Please don't shoot me,'" Jenkins said.
The man forced Jenkins to the ground.
The man's wife heard the commotion from upstairs and hid under a bed with the boy. As she tried to use a cell phone to alert police, the gunman apparently heard the cell phone and opened fire in the room.
"He heard that and that's when he panicked. The next thing I know, he fired into the room. Unfortunately, it hit my son," Jenkins said.
The gunman then fled. No arrests have been made.
