As a young girl she saw her parents and brothers being slaughtered by the Ichimonji clan (the translation only says 'my family' but she's actually saying 'my parents and brothers'), and she herselft was sebsequently raped by one of the Ichomonji brothers, right? She resolved to destroy the Ichimonji clan and she knew that meat laying her own life on the line.
I love this scene. Two true rivals, Kaede and Kurogane, actually peas in a pod, equally ruthless and steely. Jiro is such a wimp.

Kurogane became one of my favorite characters in Ran after that statue head scene.

Well, at least nobody wins.

Sorry - I made a mistake in my previous comment. Kaede is the equivalent of Edmund, not Edgar.

Kaede was essentially the female equivalent of Edgar in "Lear" and like Edgar, she get her just desserts. Powerful death scene from the Great Father of Screen Violence.
Incidentally, "Ran" will be shown on the big screen at University of Michigan's Mason Hall on Oct. 21, 2011.

That is a greatly exaggerated amount of blood.

@shin0bi88 This is a woman who has lived her entire life in the cathartic simplicity of a single purpose, avenging the deaths of her beloved family. She is evil all right, but she had to be. You decide to fight a monster, you have to be a monster yourself. I somehow find her profoundly moving, which is, I admit, a bit alarming.
