Sherlock Holmes The Musical Opening 0001

The opening number from Leslie Bricusse's wonderful Sherlock Holmes - The Musical. This play has been woefully neglected. I'm not even sure if it's ever been staged in the States. Hmmm. Just noticed a few shifts in the video. Might have to tighten it up.
In the original production, Holmes was played by Ron Moody. This is from the revival, featuring
Robert Powell in the title role.

Finally read the libretto. Apples and Pears is the name of a tavern that Holmes (in disguise) is at while spying on Bella Spellgrove. He is teaching her the finer points of the Cockney Language. Ergo all the cockney slang in the song.

Ah this is an amazing soundtrack. Never seen the play myself, but I have the music from itunes on my ipod and listen to it almost everyday. Have you ever seen it? I've always wondered what bearing "Apple's n' Pears" had on the story.

Hi! I was a blue coat F.O.H at the Cambridge Theatre in London, it starred Ron Moody, he was fantastic in the roll and you could clearly see that he enjoyed playing such a famous character. brilliant!
