America Postal Worker Union, National Association of Letter Carriers and citizens in Congress District 35 rally at Congresswomans Maxine Water Office in support of House Bill 1351 which will correct a congressional mandate that was passed by the 2006 Congress to have the Postal Service prefund future retirees health benefits at excessive amount. This mandate places a financial strain on the Postal Service and no other company or business is required to do this type of over funding. If not for this excessive fund which cover 75 years of future retirees health benfits the Postal Service would show a profit instead of the lost. The Postal Service does not need a bail out and hasn't relied on taxpayer money over the last 30 years. Passage of this Bill is needed so that Americas Postal Service can continue to provide the great service it has in America over the years.
There are suggestions for saving the Post Office by expanding the scope the services that it already provides.
In line with this thinking, the Post Office already provides financial services by selling MONEY ORDERS.
Why not have the Post Office offer ATM services for customers of small regional banks and credit unions.
This would increase competition and democratization in financial services.
Businesses such as UPS, FedEx and Western Union can be allowed to compete.
