Originally this movie was Jet Jaguar Vs Megalon, but production was halted because Toho execs felt Jet Jaguar wasn't a strong enough character to carry the movie. So a rewrite was done to include Godzilla and Gigan.

The cheesey-looking Godzilla suit was cobbled together in a week, and the movie was finished in three weeks (thanks to the use of tons of stock footage from numerous other Toho movies, including War Of The Gargantuas, Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla Vs Gigan).

It's ironic that Megalon, one of the more fearsome-looking Toho monsters, ended up in such a cut-rate movie.

One of the few original effects scenes had Megalon destroying a dam and a bridge, which actually looked rather impressive. So here at his best is the metal insect, the guardian of Seatopia...Megalon!

  • Megalon's just very hot, full of atomic energy. LOVES to cool off.

  • And now you know where most of the budget of this movie went to.

  • Eagerly awaiting the new DVD release so I can hear Teruyoshi Nakanos interview (most likely included) in English!!!!!

  • hahaha megalon fell _ _

Other than Jet Jaguar, there's not jack-squat similar to Ultraman. And Ultraman really spawned an entire genre of giant human like superhero movies and shows (called henshin toksatsu). So calling this a rip off is a bit unfair. Though it is arguably lame. To be clear, I meant it wasn't bad compared to other entries in the daikaiju genre, such as "Gamera Super Monster."

  • @KillerPikmin Sorry but a rip off version of Ultraman.. it was pretty lame..

Haha that's the same with me. I started out with Godzilla Vs. Megalon VHS with crappy quality. Then I got a Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla/Godzilla Vs. Gigan Double Pack.

I got a DVD off Ioffer.com of Godzilla Vs. Megalon English and Japanese versions and they are both in widescreen. Japanese version is still the best in quality though. Plus it only costed me $8.

  • This is my fav. of the series. It was the 1st I ever owned and watched it a bazillion times as a toddler before eventually getting a VHS 2-pack with G vs. Gigan and G vs. MechaG. I don't care what anybody says, it's a super-fun movie and Megalon is pretty awesome! Drills and mouth-grenades and a horn laser and he flies and he digs and WHY did he only get 1 movie? It annoys me to find that my VHS isn't even the whole film. How did you get this clip with such good quality?
