AIDID-->HELL.....

@JediAub - Anyway long story short, we achieved a huge amount in the time we were there and even got a citation from the UN for the way we did our 'Peacekeeping'. The thing is I actually liked Somalia and your average Somali's are great, friendly, resiliant people who are proud of their country and actually want to make it better. Even when the 'gunfire' broke out and we had to sort out the bad elements - I can only wish the best for them in their endeavours. I was actually sad to leave.

We were based in Baidoa in '93, inland and slightly north of Mogadishu. We got electricity re-established, a police force mobilised to work with us and the Islamic court we instigated, initiated immunisation programs, protected the wells so water was free and not extorted at gunpoint. Hunted bandits out of town. It was great to see people walking the streets and the markets at night. We were also in talks with the SLA (Somali Liberation Army) and other clan warlords. (See next post)

I know what you mean and it's a god damn shame that Aideed changed everything for southern Somalia.
I don't think the Islamic courts existed in the early 90s. Islamic courts really made a mark in 2005 when they joined forces and defeated the reigning warlords in Mogadishu...their momentum was halted by the invasion of Ethiopia in 06 and the more extreme parts of Islamic courts decided to stay and fight on while the more moderate leaders escaped to neighboring African countries.

@fairman66 - Mate on the day I left Somalia - French forces were ambushed in a town not far from ours and had the shit shot out of them. They didn't fair better then anybody else.
-
@wabdinur - True to a degree mate, however I can assure you the only reason it was important to take out Aideed was so the stabilization would be easier and the aid would flow faster. Their intention was good. I was there as part of the multinational force and we delivered more food aid and civic aid then you can imagine. Got hospitals running, helped the Islamic courts and died for Somalians. As for your comment - "They chose to fear one man..."
Unprepared for him - yes, Fear him - no way...

After Somalia kicked out the Soviets...it gave Soviet bases to America. If Aidid wasn't threatened by the American/UN presence in Somalia during the civil war and actually thought the US recognized his ambitions to govern Somalia...he would have continued the same Somali-American partnership like the previous Siad Barre regime.
Aidid felt that the US government didn't tolerate his actions against the Siad Barre regime and that its intentions was to spoil Aidid's political agenda.
-
@wabdinur its America who wanted to establish a base in Somalia and used Aideed as an excuse.

Clinton....you Fuckn Idiot
-
@riseofdixieland13 you idiot there were Somalis fighting Somalis too, on that same day
The plan was to stabilize Somalia and get rid of the bad apples (Aideed). America had a hard time capturing that one man and decided to pack up and leave Somalia. One pesky man got America to forget about her real objectives...to stabilize a country that was once her ally. They chose to fear one man over helping the overwhelming people of Somalia. Remember, that battle of 93 wasn't about Somalia vs America, it was American deltas versus Aidid's local militias.

@robp545
Fuck that shit, against the Pentagon's wishes, the Bush administration allowed Ethiopia (Somalia's arch enemy) to invade war-torn Somalia and put in place a puppet leader. All the warring factions made a temporary peace pact and aimed their guns at the invading Ethiopians...no amount of American aerial bombings or the large Ethiopian ground presence deterred the Somalis and they kept fighting from 2006-2009. The Ethiopians cut their losses and withdrew.
