http://www.pinkslipmovie.com Independently directed and produced by Karen Bennett, a teacher at Millikan Middle School in Sherman Oaks, California, Pink Slip brings to light troubling trends in public education. Written and directed by Karen Bennett, a middle school teacher in LAUSD, the documentary explores the effects of the annual layoffs to our youngest generation of teachers and exposes the fast approaching teacher shortage due to declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs and retiring baby boomers.

Asking the question, "Who will be left to teach our children?" Pink Slip is aimed at bringing awareness to the community and politicians. The goal of this documentary is to convince lawmakers to provide a stable annual budget for education in the state of California and prevent the loss of a generation of teachers.

Thank you to the teachers, administration, parents, and students of Millikan Middle School who were involved in this project. Thank you to Shirley Hoffner and Fanny Krivit from California State University, Northridge for their interviews and support. Thank you to Laura Wagner for the incredible still photography and to Barry Shereshevsky for the amazing print artwork.

  • wow. thank you. I am anticipating rif #5 this year as an elementary teacher. one year my rif came when I was 8 months pregnant, then one came the same exact day I signed the closing documents to my new home. tragic.

  • Fantastic film! My eyes were tearing up at the end over the teachers who were "not rescinded", so sad. This especially hit home for me because I am a new LAUSD teacher (2009-present), and I am in ADULT EDUCATION. As bad as it is in K-12, Adult Ed. is getting hit so much worse, and I have been told I will probably be Laid Off in January. And why? Because I was so successful last semester and "completed" so many students out of my class that my attendance dropped. Why Calif., are you doing this??

  • I am a riffed elementary teacher in LAUSD currently working as a long term sub. I really appreciated the video. This was done in good taste and has a message that many people can identify with. I have mostly been going through this for the last three years on my own and it is nice to see a film that shows I am not the only one going through the same thing. I was also able to share this with my family to help them understand what I have been going through aswell. Thank you!

  • Thanks for doing this. I ama Special Ed. Teacher with LAUSD and even though I still have a pay check, because of these same budget cuts I have moved around to practically one school a year for 3 or 4 years now NOT doing my job-- teaching Special Ed. I have done everything BUT. People think Special Ed. teachers are untouchable. Budget cuts affect ALL teachers--whether they have a job or not. It's a different kind of uncertainty doing a job which is not the best use of your your talents.

  • Great film. Thanks for taking the time to produce this film. We need to educate everyone in what is happening to our public schools in this state and in this country.

  • Why not let teacher's do there job instead of moving them from place to place?
