CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- It appears alcohol leaves it's mark on the DNA of young adults who drink alcohol regularly, even if it's just on weekend occasions or for special events. A professor at National Polytech Institute who noticed students were often hungover on Monday morning after a weekend of drinking conducted a study to find out what these short bouts of alcohol do to the body. She noted most of the time we consider the long term health impact of liver damage, cancer, and addiction. So in this study she looked at two groups of students ranging in age from 18 to 23. All were in good health, one group consisted of those who didn't drink alcohol on the weekend and the other group averaged about a liter and a half of beer on the weekend.Researchers then measured each study participants activity of an enzyme which is influenced by alcohol and ultimately leads to the breakdown or damage of cells in the body. She expected a slight difference in the drinkers and non drinkers but was shocked by what her team discovered. Those who drank alcohol had double the damage compared to those who did not. When they assessed this one step further on DNA in the body the damage was five times greater in the drinkers. The conclusion is that there is short term damage to the body even if you only overdo it on the weekend.
