Sadly I am a German-American who doesn't know German so I have to resort to watching the English Language version of DW news.
What I was really curious about is how popular the movie was with the German public not just if it was a critical success.
I am just bewildered by some comments posted by Germans and Austrians under the age of 30 regarding the War.
That's another subject though....

@rampking1 The german wikipedia page says it won many german film awards at the time and many of the people who worked on it got a carrer boost out of it.

I would say, one of the best war films ever made. What i like most is that it is neutral. Many other war films are offending or unrealistic. Especially Hollywood is used to produce more or less nationalistic propaganda movies.
