http://lds.org/csm Not long after Elder and Sister Olsen were married, they felt a desire to serve a mission together. They chose the Church's Addiction Recovery Program where they learned to serve with unconditional love.
@tobymays Oh yea I am Toby and Iam an ex Mormon and Ex aa member. I also understand that principales like tolerance and honesty have nothing to do with the group you belong to. Trying to define them by a group standard will only serve to limit your understanding of them.
@tobymays If you were to look at the role spirtual development plays in either program, you would see it basically is a means to develop a support system and little else, a change of behavior The development of a relationship with a higher power has nothing to do with getting sober. God doesnt wave his wand and take the addiction away. It serves as a path to stay sober. In AA dogma you dont even need god, just a faith in somthing bigger than yourself.
@blushaz The "real" 12 steps? Ok maybe the original, but then again that could mean the Oxford group. Like all cult mentalities the constant reinforcing of groups dependance, whether we are talking 12 steppers or Mormons is the same. Trying to state that the principals of the 12 steps are something different than a program like this promotes is silly. While I will be the first to testify Mormons are batpoop crazy, the AA approach to god is no more noble than the mormons approach.
Here in Utah we are used to seeing efforts of a church machine to regain control of those run off by the controlling mentality. Machiavelli would have been proud to view this Theocracy in application of his ideas to control the people, and original Utah was established as a Theocracy, folks. Open-mindedness is one vital key to sobriety.
Bless the efforts of these good people....But, the foundation of the "real" 12 steps is to come to a God of your "own" understanding, not that of some form of religiosity. That must be the way to become truly free. One high on the inside of LDS 12-step, revealed the purpose is to salvage membership. A twelve step model: not the same as Spiritual principles revealed in the 12 Steps, they are Universal, for God is All-inclusive, never exclusive.
