Budapest, HUNGARY - 1988 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Short Program - Katarina Witt of East Germany placed 2nd in this skate to remain in 1st Place going into the Long Program.
Slow skating, lots of posing, lots of skating on 2 feet (easy), mediocre footwork and easy triples. Good thing she was decent in figures and had nerves of steel.. Say what you will about the current judging system but I don't miss the days when skaters were held up by reputation or won because other better skaters has to "wait their turn."
Actually, the famous showgirl costume started life with fewer feathers! They added a bunch of feathers at the Olympics, after the other coaches complained.
You can see the original unmodified costume by searching on Youtube for Katarina Witt at the 1987 NHK Championships. It basically has no feathers in front, and a lot fewer in the back.
Yes. There was a rule change after the 1988 Olympics that the Ladies should wear ' appropriate attire,' This coming about after Liz Manley's coach raised a bit of a ruckus at the Olympics' @ Katatrina's costume.
