This is a video about fractal Skrying otherwise known as crystal ball gazing. The term Skrying comes from the old English word descry meaning to see or to observe. Skrying has come to be associated with clairvoyance. Originally, however, crystal balls were used as an aid to enhance vision. I really wanted to use Fractal Skrying as the title of my video but since only one out of one thousand knows what it means, I would have been guaranteeing my own anonymity.

Crystal balls work because of a property known as the index of refraction The index of refraction is a measure of how much the speed of light is reduced as it passes through a medium such as crystal, diamond, emerald, etc. It is unique for each substance and has historically been used (by me for example) as a tool in analytical chemistry. This video is called The Glass of Silent Time because (1) I think it sounds cool, and (2) Since light speed and time are inextricably linked, crystal balls or a glass full of water for that matter, silently reduce time, hence the title. The vast number of truly monumental events that occur in our immediate environment without our conscious awareness is of and by itself a clear expression of the divine nature of the cosmos. We do not need metaphysical explanations; the physical ones are sufficiently miraculous unto themselves.

Crystal has an index of refraction of 2.0. The crystal ball I use in my video, however, is a magical one because I can vary the index of refraction to view the exact place and magnification I choose. This has a specific advantage over the conventional zoom function because it enables simultaneous viewing of the base fractal plus the skryed region. In this way, a viewer can see that the enhanced region really is present in the fractal being viewed.

Aside from the practical applications of this fractal technique (which I wont waste time on because few people ever read this anyway), it is the artistic result that I find particularly satisfying. The index of refraction algorithm I use is flawless. The finished image is indistinguishable in every way from a real crystal ball. Actually, it is even superior because my crystal ball has no flaws or distortion imperfections.

Please note that this video is not to be confused with my video entitled Fractal Crystal Spheres. The Fractal Crystal Spheres are actual three-dimensional rotatable spheres. They are different all the way around. The crystal ball images in this video are three-dimensional fractals (all of my fractals are three-dimensional as a matter of artistic pride) as viewed through a transparent sphere that looks the same from any angle of rotation.

So the next time you look at a glass of water, be conscious of the magic you see: you are literally looking at a time machine.

  • @bone101ify Thank you so much for your kind words. The crystal spheres were an especially challenging aspect of the video. I am glad to see it appreciated. It doesn't get any better than ooos and aaahs. Please drop by anytime; you are always welcome.

  • this entire video is truly amazing. 8:35 almost made me fall out of my chair. For me it was a perfect example of beauty that exists beyond the surface.

  • Ludacrisbutler, your phrase _ beauty that exists beyond the surface_ embodies the very essence of what I try to convey in my work. I very much appreciate that sentiment, because it shows that I have made a connection with someone who understands. Thank you kindly and please visit me anytime, you are always welcome.
