The mayor of Rikuzentakata saw one third of the city's employees perish in the tsunami. More than 70% of his city, including his own home, has been swept off the face of the earth. The body of his wife was finally found almost four weeks after the tsunami struck. Thankfully, his two children survived. He made this appeal on March 29th, but the need persists today.

"My name is Futoshi Toba. I'm the mayor for the city of Rikuzentakata.

Our region has suffered catastrophic damage and we are in desperate need right now.

Despite receiving supplies from many places, we are still in dire need of many basic items, such as fresh vegetables.

We are also uncertain about the availability of temporary housing, because of the lack of funding.

Although we have much support from all of Japan, the catastrophe is so great we will need the generous support from others abroad as well.

There are so many residents who are in desperate need here. I sincerely would like to ask for continued world wide support, because what we have now is far from enough."
