UK Parties. New Labour - removed the word socialism of out of thier handbook. No sharing of wealh but uses the state to control the people. Spying, snooping, social enginnering with a liberal 'bent', policing of language. Pro multi cultural pro gay rights promotes fears about global warmning anyone whos against is labelled racist, islamaphobic homophobic denier etc Monetary principles - selling the country to the rich and powerful. furthermore, though many leftists refer to the left as communism and the right as fascism, they are refering only to the seating arrangements in many european parliaments (the fascists call themselves nationalists), with all differing views seated in the middle.

the actual political spectrum was a graphical illustration invented by our founders as a descrpitor for our style of government (centrist). to the far left was tyranny, to the far right was anarchy. in the middle was the eagle.

no, left wing and right wing was not part of the lexicon in those days. you are right that liberalism was anti-royalist and conservative (in a european sense), but socialism existed prior to liberalism and was touted both by some liberals and some royalists. it wasn't until the 19th century that totalitarian socialism (communism and fasciscm, which are essentially the same) came into being, it was based on the claim that liberalism was outdated.

As far as I remember, right-wing used to be associated with royalists and conservatives who wanted to uphold the rule and economic priviliges of kings/aristocracy/clergy, or any other elite group. Liberalism and free market ideology was considered leftwing. Frankly speaking, liberalism and communism, nazism, socialism all have common origin - liberal thinkers who rejected tradition and established power in 18th century.

Nazis and BOlsheviks and Maoists are not "brothers". They are rival factions of the same criminal enterprize, however.

They are as much of the same political type as Mafia families are of the same criminal type. They may occasionally fight against each other and hate each other, but they use the same exact methods and to the same exact ends - the empowerment and enrichment of the Party elite, to the detriment of everyone else.

Most cruel joke of all, however, has been played by Hitler & Co. on those German capitalists and small businessmen who once backed National Socialism as a means of saving Germany's bourgeois economic structure from radicalism. The Nazi credo that the individual belongs to the state also applies to business. Some businesses have been confiscated outright, on others what amounts to a capital tax has been levied. Profits have been strictly controlled.
