Carey Beebe preparing the harpsichord buff stop.

A guillotine is used to chop a strip of soft deerskin leather into consistently-sized pads for the buff. The pads are picked up with the tip of an X-Acto knife and transferred to a tray where they can be retained in order.

For the fixing to the batten in the instrument, each pad is picked up in turn with flat-jawed pliers, dabbed in glue and then pressed against the string while being held down momentarily on the batten.

The buff stop on this instrument works on the back 8´ set of strings and is operated by the player's left hand.

Photos of this instrument as work progresses can be found here: http://www.hpschd.nu/wip/53.html
