About....

Our installation, As the World Turns, was an exploration of the influence television plays on American culture and in American life. Through television, one can see an illusion of the world while completely missing out on life. The seduction of programming, daily or weekly "To Be Continued..." keeps individuals glued to the television screen, imprisoned in their homes, and influenced by advertising so they will be dedicated and well behaved mindless consumers.

Our intent was to make observers who came through the gallery space feel uncomfortable in this environment. We physically guided their experience and interaction within the environment by laying down a prescribed path on the floor that forced them to walk through the mock living space and to interrupt the television watchers' line of site to the television. Multiple televisions and living room environments were coupled with over stimulation from the motion image and audio blaring in the space. The overall effect was a feeling of coldness and devastation.

Hopefully, people left the installation feeling quite uncomfortable about the mass media consumption culture which influences our society.
