In the late 1950s the interstate network across the USA was designed so that the 707 had a straight run of 3000m to land safely on the highway. Every 15 miles the interstate was made wide enough and straight enough to land. The weakness was well known so it is unfair to say that the 707 was flawed. I was made to cross the USA in 7 hours.
