Thunderstorms over Portland, OR - July 3, 2008

Spectacular thunderstorms gave most of the Portland metropolitan area quite a rude awakening on the morning of Thursday, July 3, 2008. At around 2:30am, several strong cells popped up in the immediate area and lasted for a good two hours. Heavy rain, penny-sized hail, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were reported in many areas of the northern Willamette Valley and SW Washington.
I was able to capture quite an amazing array of vivid lightning bolts -- some of the best I've seen in a long time...all thanks to a great (and safe) vantage point in North Portland.

ok this didnt wake me up but i had a dream on that day that lightning struck a tree close and my dad said that there was a t storm.

man this summer we had barely any thunderstorms and i live in the gresham oregon area. I was hoping we could get some strong ones this summer cause im a fan of storms like this. But eastern oregon got most of them haha.

I think that for the past three or four years there's been lightning right on or around the 4th of July.

Nice! I like the transformer flash at 1:18. Lucky you didn't lose power, thought it might have made the video a little more spectacular.
This storm woke me up from a dead sleep. What part of PDX was this? I was in Milwaukie, we had it for about 20 minutes or so, but it sure was intense!

I took this from an apartment complex right along Marine Drive near Delta Park. It was definitely quite a morning!

MAN that's ALOT of lightning. Never seen anything soo intense until this video.
Why does the scenes black out like a slideshow after each strike?

I have like 30 mins of footage so I cut and pasted the best strikes together. Most of the CG strikes are from a 15 minute period where the sky was basically lit up continuously.
(The "blacking out" is merely a transitional thing.)

Tom, nice work. Yeah, it's me... I had the original name, but something happened with the password on the account... I am not sure.
Anyhow I enjoyed both of your videos and hopefully we have more storms this Summer so you have more opportunities to record them.
