This is a refresh rate test between the iRex DR1000S and Sony PRS-505 e-ink readers. The video is a motion capture from my point-and-shoot, so forgive the sub-par quality.
The DR is way faster than the Sony at flipping pages. If you look at the slow motion video, you'll see that the Sony is doing some real fancy stuff while refreshing the screen, and spends twice as long doing it (the Sony has barely begun its refresh cycle before the DR is done). This results in significantly less ghosting, but at the cost of refresh speed. Considering that this sort of ghosting is not usually apparent (you don't see it while reading this comic, for example), I prefer the DR's philosophy, which makes zooming & panning large images actually possible on an e-ink screen with its snappy refresh.
I tried an e-ink reader that had a "full refresh" setting that, when checked, caused the page to refresh as you show in the sony (a partial/"dirty" image before the complete one). When unchecked the refresh was like the iRex: faster and without noticeable errors.

I had a PRS-505 and it wasn't so pleasant for most mangas. I had to do the zoom and scrolling to read it in the beginning, but you can set it in landscape mode and just scroll down (much easier that way). Forget about reading a whole page as shown in the video, it's just not readable since the resolution of the 505 is low. I sold mine, and I'll be investing in an iRex.

How are the manga's formatted? Is it PDF or what? Also is the text on the 505 legible without having to zoom or pan? I am strongly considering getting the 505 for exactly what you have displayed: reading manga.
