As an Irishmen, you should feel proud to call this song part of your heritage. Even though the author of the song was an Englishmen, this is one of the most important songs about the Irish Diaspora to ever exist. There is no set of lyrics that better echoes the sentiment this song carries, a son going to a faraway place, and a parent waiting on better times to facilitate his return.
