  • The 1960s was a great era in music.

  • @sqweekymcshrpnl I worked with your dad on several 30th Anniversary R & R dates and he was a great guy. I miss him. We would also usually see each other in Las Vegas at the IAFE convention and get a chance to visit. He always came through on any promises he made and he treated everyone with respect. He's missed.

  • @sqweekymcshrpnl great comment. I came here after running across one of those TimeLife ads on TV and just happened to read some of the previous comments. Unfortunate that I was born a little too late to be a teen during this time - as I think the 50's music is just awesome.

  • he was the most awesome dad a guy could have. the best man i have ever met. flaws and all. i will always be proud of how he raised me and blessed to have had him in my life. miss you pop!

  • thanx 'BrokenArrows' for sharing your input on Donnie's earlier record. I learned later from the CD 'Rockin' Bones' the actual guitar track of 'Bertha Lou' was recorded by Dorsey Burnette and Donnie Brooks (aka Johnny Faire) was brought in to lay down the vocal track. It seems Dorsey was already under contract to another label. Dorsey's version was included on that CD but it is noticably tamer than Donnie's version.

  • @shadowjack59 : Thanks for the info about Donnie Brooks recording as Johnny Faire. I had no idea. His version of "Bertha Lou" TOTALLY rocks -- it's one of the best, most frantic early rock songs I've ever heard. I came across it around 15 years ago on a German label collection (Buffalo Bop Records) of obscure 45s called called "A Ball Tonight." The dude could hold his own against any rockabilly great.

  • fferocious. . . I challenge you to listen to Donnie's 1957 effort "Bertha Lou" -- Johnny Faire (Surf 5019). That was his recording name then. It exemplifies the dramatic difference between hard-core mid fifties Rock and Roll than the more Pop Rock direction that music was taking 3 years later. The record thunders wiith over the wall 'wild' singing and a stinging guitar bridge that features distortion well before the late sixties. "Yeah Fifties"

  • Thanks for the wondeful memories. This by far is the best version. I play it at least once a month........It 's energy moves me back in time to youthful thoughts and I am once again young.........

  • LOVE the girl in the background at the beginning of this video. What a cutie!

  • The GO-GO chicks excite me! Donnie was born in Dallas, Texas.
