The Battle of Okpo was a 2 day fight around the harbor of Okpo at Geoje Island in 1592. It was the first naval battle of the Imjin War and the first victory of Admiral Yi. The Battle of Okpo caused anxiety and nervousness among the Japanese, because afterward Yi began to deploy his navy to attack Japanese supply and carrier vessels.

Yi's headquarters were at Yeosu, which is west of Namhae Island of the southern coast of Korea. The surrounding area of Okpo and Yeosu is dotted with numerous islands and tight straits. It is in this area where many of the naval battles in which Yi defeated the Japanese took place.

Admiral Yi approached Okpo harbor the next day. He saw around 50 Japanese ships anchored there. The Japanese soldiers were looting and killing Korean civilians. Enraged, Yi attacked.

The Japanese panicked and quickly boarded their ships in an attempt to escape. The Koreans encircled the Japanese and commenced firing with their cannons. Immediately, several Japanese ships disintegrated. The Japanese commander Todo Takatora ordered his men to counterattack with arquebuses but did not kill any of the Koreans. After futile fighting, the Japanese threw their weapons and armor overboard and jumped into the water to flee. Yi pulled back into the sea and the next day neared a harbor called Chokjinpo. The Korean commander was again saddened by the Japanese harassing the Koreans and ordered his men to throw a heavy volley of arrows and cannonballs upon the Japanese. 11 out of 13 ships were destroyed. The Koreans helped themselves to the treasures inside the Japanese wrecks and sailed away back to Yeosu.

  • mixing the ingredients of gundpowder during the fight instead of having a ready to use gundpowder prevents fire and explosion in the ship

  • okpo battle was the first victory of korean navy.

before okpo battle, korea army fall a series of defeats and korean people depressed.

japanese army occupy hanyang the capital of korea(now Seoul). and occupy Pyeongyang. only in a month.

navy's victory consequently block the supplies by yellow sea route.

korean civilian uprise and counter attack to japan army. japanese army supply become difficult, so Japanese army cannot help retreat from Pyeongyang and Seoul.

  • @lcddg I've been studying world history for some time and I have come the conclusion that Europe would not have amounted to anything were it not for countless Asian innovations and inventions. Being Asian myself, I applaud your claim of Asian Pride. *claps

  • @gerbenvanessen not to mention teaching a lot of people how to properly mix it.

  • @lcddg I also means having to take manpower or time to mix gunpowder in the middle of a fight, did you ever think of that?

  • apart from King sejong , and Jang young shil ( who manufactured 2 stage rockets..I may say that may be the first in the world) probably Commander Yi Soon shin are only great leaders I know of Choseon Kingdom...

is there anyone else that some korean historians can suggest..

  • @lcddg

I know right. Asians are aweome!

  • @RoyalRed0926 if koreans look lame u look lamer

  • @RoyalRed0926 Wow. Why do you generalize korean people as looking "lame"? What they are wearing looks rather strange but that doesn't give you the justification to bag on koreans. Don't forget, clothing fashion in most cultures in the late-sixteenth century were what you call "lame". Just wait, in less than a decade, someone is gonna think what you are wearing now is "lame".

  • @lcddg

And thats thanks to the europeans (that you find so stupid) who established their financial hegemony over the world.

  • @Rephrenix well if i post this using my own language then you wouldn't be able to understand it and you wouldn't like it like you did in my earlier post..use your brain dude it's free

  • @lcddg

I like the way you're claiming your asian pride... in english.
