Yeah a hoist is the way to go. Though when we pull mine out we have a hydrolic lift (about 4' by 3') to hold the bottom and we lower the engine out not raise the car. Also you can just take the hub nuts out and push the axels out of the disks instead of taking the whole shock tower out.

You mean Spark plugs ? I replacet them when the engine was out off the car.
