he wasnt . if you look carefully that is the neck of his cello or cello -like instrument. you can see the body of the instrument and the top of it where u tune it from.

The instrument is an upright bass (usually called a double bass in classical music and also known as a bass fiddle or string bass), which is used very commonly in jazz bands.
