Easter was traditionally a time of celebration for the workers in the mill and mining towns of Lancashire in the north west of England, with fairs, carnivals and processions. In some towns such as Rochdale, Bacup and Burnley, men danced in skirts with faces blacked up, and with maple discs - known as "cocnuts" strapped to their elbows, knees and hands. They banged these together as part of the dance.

This is the Rochdale Coconut Dance - played on two guitars, bass guitar, hi-hat and high D whistle.

Chords:
Theme A (play it twice)
Em / / / Em / / / Am / G / D / / /
Em / / / Em / / / Am / G / D / Am /

Theme B (play it twice)
G / / / D7 / / / G / / / D7 / / /
G / / / D7 / / / G / D7 / G D7 / /

  • It's lovely to hear this tune played at a steady danceable speed.

  • Thanks. I purposely played this version at a dance speed. When we play it in sessions, it usually rips along! :-)

  • This is so great! Is this regular recorder?

  • No - it's a high whistle in D - similar to a recorder but a little more expensive...

  • Ecky thump ! How's yer belly for spots ?

  • Gradely, owd lad! Check out the Britannia Coco-nut Dancers of Bacup web site...
