DEMONSTRATION: Comparison of amp sounds from a Mesa Boogie Roadking and Line Flextone III
ADDITIONAL PEDALS: None
GUITAR: Ibanez RG8527 J Custom
AMP: Line 6 Flextone III XL and Mesa Boogie Roadking
CAB: Mesa Boogie Recto 4x12
SONG: 'The Prisoner's Dilemma' by Vinyl Future

This is a brief comparison of a Mesa Boogie Roadking Dual Rectifier versus a Line 6 Flextone III amp modeller set to a amp model to replicate the sound of a Mesa Boogie recifier.

Both amps belong to my bandmate Gary, (you can see my Tremoverb sitting on top of his RK. Gary plays a short riff from a song called 'The Prisoner's Dilemma' by my band Vinyl Future.

The video was recorded at low volume, so in theory the Line 6 is at an advantage and should sound better. Both amps are dry i.e. no effects.

If you have any questions or if you wish to request a specific demonstration of any of the equipment shown in the video, feel free to contact me through youtube or email me at my bands website, at:

  • hey man, whats the footswitch like for the flextone? is there a noticable delay in going from say a clean patch to a dirty patch?

  • The floorboard controller is great. The amp is very average without it. There is no delay in switching from clean to overdrive channels its instantaneous

  • can you send me this song's tab man?? Please !! :)

    Amazing riff!

  • Afraid I dont have any riffs dude, otherwise I would send them. We dont tend to tab stuff out, we just teach other the riffs at rehearsals

  • ha! i see now, you've posted more vids! not just the metal!

    sorry, i'm retarded

but i can play more than 3 chords. 4 is more than 3, isn't it?

  • No worries man. I play a pile of different styles, hence the need for several amps and a ton of effetcs!

  • Good shit, a bit unfair though because the flex is a 212 and it's under a computer desk, which looks to be like the perfect size for it, so its getting "boxy" and the Mesa is played through a 412 with the dude right next to it. Obviously if you have a 2000 dollar amp with another amp that costs as much as your cab...I think the Mesa will win. Not knockin the flextone though, with some equing and studio work it could sound just like the Mesa

  • I actually prefer the Flextone here...

  • I have a several tube amps and love them all, but I am still impressed with my Flextone III as well. It sounds especially good with my Les Paul.

  • @fddustin sorry man but kirk use's randall since 07 :P but he used mesa for about ten years and before that a jcm800 mod....

  • tubes = tone.

  • @ketutscope Soviet Russia !?!?!? Are you fucking retarded?

  • Mesa Boogie is metal, clean, and everything in between go to Mesaboogie go to the artist section see kirk Hammett from Metallica, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons, and others Kirk loves Mesa! He said, only Mesa can he the tones .See for yourself what the Masters have to say

  • @mikebike74

I've used the Flex for about 3 years myself, gigging regularly and even used it for recording. It constantly sounded thin and compressed (boxy, if you will) when I would go back and listen to live shows and such. After shutting off the Cabinet Modeling and not using the compressor all while pulling up the volume a bit, this thing now rivals my Fender Twin! The Hiwatt model is amazing on this..as for distorted tones, I use good pedals ;-) TS9->Fulltone OCD-> Keeley BD2!

  • @bigtom737

I've used the Flextone for about 3 years now in my funk band. Clean tone is pretty essential to me, and I've used the Hiwatt Model exclusively (its the 'red' channel on Jazz/Clean spot). You could really push the drive a bit before it breaks up..very very crispy and full. I'd take off the speaker cab simulator though, the Celestions are good as is. (to get it off, hold down the amp model button and turn to Line6 Clean)..kill the compressor & add the noise gate as well!

  • Mesa wins

    FATALITY
